Hearphones

The chorus has purchased two sets of hearphones as part of our musical improvement strategy. As you know, the voice you hear ‘in your head’ when you sing is not the voice that others hear. That’s why many of us suffer the shock of that awful ‘tape recorder’ voice.

The hearphone is designed to let you hear your voice as others hear it. Place the hearphone on your head as you would normal headphones and move the plastic shields so that they are in front of your mouth. Now sing normally. You may think you are singing too loud, but that is only because your voice is being redirected back into your ears. It is important that you sing at your normal volume.

Listen to your pitch. Do you have good breath support? See if you are really singing those vowels and diphthongs as you know you should. Does your voice sound pinched and tight or is it relaxed and open? Experiment as you sing with the headphones. See if changing something about the way you sing changes the sound that you hear. Use them to get immediate feedback on the quality of your singing.

The hearphones are available for use at chorus practices. Just ask to borrow them, and if you have any questions about how to use them, any of the section leaders will be pleased to help.

Pitch Tuner

Are you wondering if you are really singing on top of the note? The chorus' pitch tuner will tell you.

This little gadget tells you the note you are singing and tells you whether you are singing it under or over the true pitch. It is very simple to use. Just turn it on and sing a note into the built in microphone. The display tells you the note you are singing and the dial moves to the left if you are under pitch and to the right if you are singing on the top of the note. There are even lights for added feedback.

The pitch tuner is also available for use at chorus practices.
