Ten Tips from Erelyne:

The following are some suggestions from Erelyne, a former assistant director of the chorus, on how you can help yourself to grow as a singer and help improve the overall chorus sound.

  1. Bring your tape recorder to every practice.
  2. Listen to your tape through the week. Hear and recognize notes and words, vowels, target sounds, interpretation, attacks and releases, ending of a phrase - are we all doing them together.
  3. Prepare a tape for your section leader to assist you on problem areas.
  4. Listen to your learning tape.
  5. Go over words of new music even before learning notes.
  6. Practice areas of a song corrected to reinforce and feel comfortable in performing.
  7. Review scheduled songs for the next practice.
  8. Practice good posture and breathing technique every day.
  9. Only 20% of what is learned on a Monday night will be retained in 7 days. Therefore listening to your tape and doing your homework during the week will improve your retention immensely.
  10. Have an inner smile. Activate the face. Be involved in the music and words. You will enjoy your performance more and your audience will love you.

After all these points I will add - learn one (1) thing at a time. Then go on to another until it all comes together smoothly and naturally.
